I have Slackware 9.0. Downloaded the complete distro from www.slackware.com for free. That took a while ! (CD's are available) Installed it with the newbie option. Gnome desktop. No problems. Everything but DSL automatically set up. Installed RP-PPPOE (www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/) for DSL with no problems. Reinstalled with expert option to set it up how I wanted. Still no problem. I'm far from a Linux expert or super-geek. Just a little reading and everything went smoothly. I did partition my disk with PartitionMagic but have used fdsk in the past.
