It's been in the file.e i have been using for years, but i don't know where it 
came from or who wrote it. I am not even sure it was originally named getf(), 
it's likely i renamed it to fit the getc() & gets() naming pattern, since i also
did a getw() for the web. Check email archives for a discussion years ago 
debating use of gets() vs getc() in this function.
