uuencode program

Alan Tu asked for a uuencode program that runs under DOS.

Irv replied with a program that he said would meet Alan's requirements, and
would run under either DOS or Windows/File Manager.

I tried it and can't make it go.

I have a number of files that came in from the Listserv but are only
gibberish. Thinking that they might be uuencoded, I tried Irv's program on
them. They invariably generate general protection faults, working either
from File Manager or from DOS.

Some of them are zipped; I know not to try the program on them. I haven't
tried unzipping them yet. That's often a can of worms by itself.

I thought at first maybe the program was supposed to run under Windows 95,
which I don't have. But that wouldn't affect its operation under DOS, when
Windows is turned off.

(No way am I going to buy Windows 95 now, with Windows 98 just around the
corner. If Windows 98, when it appears, requires Windows 95 as a
prerequisite, I'll wait to see if a stand-alone version comes out, or until
I get definitive information that no stand-alone version will be released.
