Just to clarify...

Can you "modify" your programming? NO! It JUST HAPPENS (the wonders of 
our hardware, eh?). In other words, we need not be CONSCIOUS of the 
change because it happens automagically/automatically/autonomically... 
:)

So, the AI entity need not be able to modify its own programming... It 
just has to happen as a function of its hardware (whether emulated (most 
likely) or not).

As an aside, Orson Scott Card is my favorite author.
