memory address

Hi all,
I'm very new in the use of peeks and pokes and I have some questions
about how to use them.
which is the nomenclature used as address in peek/poke/allocate?
is something like 'segment:offset'?
if I have 32 MB ram,how can I read,for example the byte=20
number 100?=20
what happens if I try to peek/poke an address beyond=20
32 mb?
anyone has a routine to check out how big is the memory to avoid
ilegal read/write?

thanks,
