It is absolutely unsafe to do what you have suggested. If for some reason, the second rename fails badly and the old file has already been deleted...oops...now we have nothing. In general, I would want to test the "compressed" file before deleting the old file anyway. That way, I will have an almost immediate recovery if there are problems with the compress.
