I always thought that the idea of hacker came from the idea of making furniture with a machete. No matter how good a job you do - it always looks kind of "hacked". So, I always thought a hacker was an undisciplined programmer like me who just hacked together whatever worked at the moment. You end up with software that kind of works, and is sufficient for lots of purposes, but can only be described as "hacked". I'm sure lots of Euphoria programmers end up with this - programs with bits from there attached to libs from here and the whole thing is kind of "hacked".
