the by -1 thing.  It works.  I've run into cases where it DOESN't work and
gives an error message when I try to index by negative numbers, I just
figured it didn't work at all.  Weird why it didn't work then, the error I
got specifically mentioned the step value needing to be positive and when
I did it "backwards" it worked.  Probably gremlins.  ish.
