Hi
Kat, so you don't want to use wifi, and you don't want to use ethernet. What was your plan to communicate with the pi?
Also wifi can be made safer - up the encryption level, and restrict the MAC addresses to known machines, and write a script to monitor machine access to the network - I think you have the skills for that. Also turn off the wifi when you don't need it. A cheap network monitor and firewall can actually be made with Pi too.
Oh, also get yourself a small experimentors kit for the pi and start experimenting.
