Here's a recent conversation that came up on Twitter which is also worth considering:

What are your criteria for "good faith participation" in an argument?
Here's my stab:
1) Interest in the answer to the question
2) Agree to basic ground rules of reasoning, e.g. no logical fallacies
3) Charitable readings of opponent's claims, where possible
4) Accept their beliefs as sincerely held, not tactical
5) Accept that you could be wrong
One addendum, which is that I think everything good follows from 1. If you're interested in the question, good faith participation ensues.
Also now that I think about it 4 is almost always good, but not necessary. You can argument for something you don't believe in pursuit of 1.
