Windows gets more confused than I am

I have a Normal (secondary, child) window open, just displaying information
that relates to my main window. However, a point comes in my processing
where I want to require the user to attend to something happening in the
child window.

Since I have been unable to discover a way (by searching the MS Web site or
the Web in general) to set focus to the secondary window and make it Modal
on-the-fly, I have tried opening another window that is in all respects a
duplicate of the original secondary windows, except it is Modal rather than
Normal.

Say mainWindow is the parent of childWindowNormal, which is the parent of
childWindowModal; or mainWindow could be the parent of both
childWindowNormal and childWindowModal. It doesn't seem to matter who is the
parent of whom. When I close the modal window, it appears that neither of
the other two windows will respond to messages any more. What could be the
problem?

I will try to produce a simplified example that exhibits the behavior I'm
concerned about, and post the code.

TIA,
George
