A suggestion for a current news flash is Irv's update to the GTK library. It's of general interest and newsworthy.

Can I get access to the home page? If we take turns updating the home page it would not be a burden to anyone.

I've given you the same access to add post new news. The other changes you describe require code changes to the forum software. (As a side note, technically you do actually already have developer access to the repo for that.)
