This doesn't help

        junk = dir("\""&writefilename&"\"")

junk is still -1. Eu cannot even see the file prior to the open attempt. Filesys.e and machine.e both get the filename intact, but naturally i cannot follow the filename into the builtin routines which machine.e calls.
