So it could well turn out that the 3 closest in one coordinate might not have any overlap with the 3 closest in the other coordinate.

Stupid me, scratch that idea. I was thinking the best three of each would do it, just like Roger on Matt's stackoverflow link, which was shot down rather smartly (in a nice way).
