um, genius, did you ever think that value() stops at an invalid character? in the case of -45.6e-, it tries to evaluate the part after the e. In the case of -45.6a, it just stops evaluating there

Chris, A good idea, but.... We still need support for hex characters. Many countries use commas and points in ways different from the USA: = many Spanish countries (correct me if I'm wrong) would write a million as = 1.000.000,00; Japan counts by 4s instead of 3s and may randomly insert a = kanji (Chinese-origin character) as a shorthand.=20 I also seriously doubt that my revisions are complete enough to publish = into a library. There is no support for date/time conversions, not to = mention the different conventions used there. I am interested, however, to see how many people have come up with their = own versions of value or get to suite localized needs. If there are = enough different revisions out there, it would prove a good starting point = for a locale library incorporating all of these. But if it's just me and = a handful of others, I'll keep it to myself unless someone specifically = asks for it. Michael J. Sabal >>> bensler at mailops.com 04/27/01 03:18PM >>> Michael, To make your routine non-country specific, why don't you modify it to = ignore ANY characters until it finds numerical ones.. This could be useful for other things too. It would extract the first=20 instance of a numeric from any place within a string. Chris

Sometime over the ether ... >> um, genius, did you ever think that value() stops at an invalid ... >did you ever consider a career in diplomacy? he he. /me with bigger he he and laughs: Diplomacy is over-rated. Informative exchange of ideas on a level playing field is way better. Take the rough with the smooth. Never forget that the Internet is like the TV. If what you see/hear/otherwise is stuff you don't want then switch off / logout / jackout / offline or filter as desired. FP
