Chris, Irv, Go to http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2396.txt. Search for Appendix B: "Parsing a URI Reference with a Regular Expression." Basically, you'll see that the 'www' is just part of the host name, and unnecessary for resolution. So, http://whatever.com is a prefectly good URL, and http://www.whatever.com may not exist. The same goes for the .com suffix (or any other). As far as IETF is concerned, you can call your site http://whatever. It should work, as long as the intervening name servers will resolve it. For example, the University of Buenos Aires website is http://www.uba.ar, and you won't reach it through http://www.uba.edu.ar. Since name resolution is done mainly 'by the numbers,' so to speak (IETF and W3C actively discourage IP naming), then anything acceptable to RFC1123 (HTTP1.0, 1996), RFC2396 (1998) and RFC2616 (HTTP 1.1, 1999, http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616.html, which changed nothing about URIs, URLs and URNs), should work fine.
