1. pre-alpha, alpha, beta
On freshmeat --> browse --> development status,
there is a list of 6 stages of development of a project.
Among them are:
2 - Pre-Alpha
3 - Alpha
4 - Beta
There seems to be no explanation on freshmeat of what these mean,
nothing in the FAQ, etc.
Is there an exact meaning of these 3 terms?
If I have a project that seems to work but needs more testing to be sure
that it works, which stage is it in?
(Specifically this project is the Linux version of "Anagram Quiz Program".
You can find it on user contributions by searching "anagram".)

I think:
Pre-Alpha: Very early testing stage
Alpha: Early testing stage/ Greek letter
Beta: Testing stage/ Greek letter

Planning stages. No code written except maybe some prototypes
or experiments. Requirements gathering and documentation are the
main activities.

Some code written but not the entire system/application. Certain
areas are expected to fail because they are not complete.

System/application is essentially complete and serious testing has begun.
This is often tested by people who are NOT the developers.
