1. IP - Network [OT]

For a subject I have this semester, I have to build a standalone network
device that has I/O lines at one end, and at the other (RJ45) communicates
through a simple protocol, perhaps UDP.

The pertinent question at the moment is: Has anyone seen on the 'net (for I
have been unable to find anything) a schematic or other explanation of what
pins on the plug do what? And what separates the data into pertinent
packets? Are the control lines there, or what? etc...

Any help very appreciated.

Do you actually have to *build* this device, or
simply put together pre-existing modules to make
it functional?

If build is the correct term, then can it be built
with
a computer, or do you have to wire up your own
logic board?

Take a look at the SitePlayer from
http://www.netmedia.com (RJ45 network interface,
several serial/parallel inputs, sends data as a
webpage over the network) $29.95

Nuts & Volts magazine is a good source of all kinds
of hardware info and projects:

For UDP protocol:

Mister Trick:

A quick search for RJ45 pinout yielded:

a pinout site:
http://www.pin-outs.com/datasheet_22.html

or this might be useful?

or this:
