to cause friction and hence slow you down, so why does the euphoria
immediately stop when it's engines die?

Language Wars is not a game that follows Newtonian Laws to the letter.
However, it's just as well, otherwise you'd be using up fuel to reverse your
forward momentum. Just for the heck of it, you should add Euphoria code to
give the Euphoria ship Newtonian motion.
