Hi everyone. After installing Euphoria 3.1.1 and Win32Lib v0.70.2c 28-Nov-2007, this error keeps occuring when i run Editor.exw, IDE.exw or EX01.EXW in the Win32lib\Demo folder. Searched the forum, and set EUINC correctly, DEP turned off. Pagefile enabled or disabled. Also tried in 3 different versions of Windows: XP SP2, Server2003 STD SP2, Server2003 ENT SP2. (All are Simplified-Chinese versions) But the error just occurs. Please help! The first few lines of ex.err are:

Thank you my friend. It seems Win32Lib v0.70.2c causes this error. v0.60.6 successfully launches IDE.exw. Still have no idea why "attempt to divide by 0" occurs in a fresh-installed XP but only a few people encounter it. You might search through Win32Lib.ew for 1/0. I've done that to discover that for some reason, I don't remember, that it could not find a handle.

The lines given end within abortErr(), but no clue what called abortErr(), how many bytes that was trying to allocate, or what was calling the allocate routine with an unreasonable request. While I applaud the effort not to post hundreds of lines of unnecessary ex.err, in this case it was too few. Regards, Pete

phndl=allocate(4) VOID=w32Func(xOpenPrinter,{pname,phndl,0}) vPrinterHandle=peek4u(phndl) vDevmodeSize=w32Func(xDocumentProperties,{0,vPrinterHandle,pname,0,0,0}) hdefPtr=w32acquire_handle(GMEM_MOVEABLE,vDevmodeSize)
So it is completely ignoring any failure by OpenPrinter/DocumentProperties. In both cases it should be calling GetLastError 'n stuff for more details. Also, pname=0 which suggests a failure setting that has gone unreported. Obviously if you're going to leave pname 0 and run into that code, it is always going to crash. Sorry, not my job to fix this, though. Regards, Pete

Indeed, the lib is unable to get the size of the printer settings structure, aka devmode. This explains the size = -1 in ex.err and the crash you get. And I strongly suspect the print service being stopped to explain this failure - driver doesn't respond. I'll have to stop everything related with printing on such failures so as to proceed smoothly even though no printer will be available (for configuration at least). Hopefully I can get this done in time for 70.3. CChris

CChris wrote: > > I'll have to stop everything related with printing on such failures so as to > proceed smoothly even though no printer will be available (for configuration > at least). I think it would be better to debug the code rather than bury the problem deeper? One thing you could reasonably do is move all such code as:
integer pinit pinit = 0 procedure initPrinter() vPrinterName = getDefaultPrinterName() setPrinterPointers(0) pinit = 1 end procedure
and sprinkle a few
if not pinit then initPrinter() end if
around the top of several printer-related routines. Then make error messages much more agressive, at least half the problem is they are silent now. I would also deliberately mangle vPrinterName as well as pretend that some other c_func calls had failed and make sure that when I did try to print I got useful error messages. According to msdn, this is wrong:
rc = w32Func(xGetDefaultPrinter,{pBuffer,pNeeded}) if rc=0 then rc=1 -- buffer holds the ASCIZ string elsif rc=ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND then
and should instead be:
rc = w32Func(xGetDefaultPrinter,{pBuffer,pNeeded}) if rc=0 then rc = w32Func(xGetLastError,{}) if rc=ERROR_INSUFFICIENT_BUFFER then -- as-is elsif rc=ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND then -- ??? else ?9/0 -- ???? end if end if
Also, while we're here, this seems wrong:
atom pname -- points to printer name pname = 0 ... pname = w32acquire_mem(0,vPrinterName) -- [OK] ... global procedure newPrinter(sequence s,integer flag) pname = s -- [not OK]
Clearly, that has simply never been tested, not even once Regards, Pete

Just add vPrinterName="CRUD" and/or pname=0 and ensure it gives reasonable errors, and/or as you say pop-up suitable dialogues, at the point of printing, without breaking/interrupting apps that do not use the printer. Then add a "newPrinter(<what it is for you>,x)" call and test that it works again. In fact it is no help whatsoever to meddle with your setup. Regards, Pete

I didn't try cancelling when prompted to choose a printer, since this doesn't occur any more. Further, checking whether a printer name exists is version dependent, just like getting the default printer. I won't be able to test that, while I could rely on code posted here for early Windows versions. As for error handling in general, if user does something really silly, like attempting to print on a printer he doesn't have and was alredy prompted for, should this really be handled? If so and if we are consistent, then there are TONS of places to add error code in, with error checking begetting errors and extremely marginal benefits. > > > > pname = s -- [not OK] > > Oops... I haven't been following the code in this thread in detail (partly because I'm not at all familiar with win32lib printing) but I'm inclined to agree with Pete on this one. It seems like the win32lib routines end up with multiple Win32 calls. Some of these seem to have some error code capabilities. While I agree that you can't validate all user input, you should probably be doing error checking wherever its possible. This ends up giving you (and the users, who are using win32lib because it's *not* a thin wrapper) much better error messages. Matt
