1. [OT] win98 etc
I was told win98 fixed the problem of win95 not accessing over 512megs
ram, and drive sizes over 120gigs. The upgrade to a newer mobo was
supposed to help also. So was upgrade from AMD K6-233mhz to P4-2.4ghz.
But win95 nor win98 will install. The way Eu uses memory, i really need
more ram onboard, and the package deal on this was cheap. So how do i
install fat32 win98se, 200gig hd? The hd is unfdisked for fat32 and i cannot
fdisk it on the win95 machine, the win98 is on cd and the cd drivers are not
loaded in safe mode win98, and the win95 won't boot on the new machine at
all. What can i do?

Hi Kat,
I'm using an Athlon 2000 with a 20GB and 120GB drive, and 512 mbs of
ram - running win98.

Okay, from what I remember (memory a little hazy about how I installed
things) win98's fdisk does okay with the 120gb drive (no idea what
it'd think of 200gb). Yup, so you can't access it without a CD
driver... Gee, this brings back horrible memories.

If you don't already have a boot disk, there are lots here:

Two options:
1. Find a bootdisk that'll give you CD support in DOS, so that you can
run the fdisk utility from the win98 CDROM (from memory, it's in
\win98 somewhere.
2. Find a bootdisk that has a version of fdisk already on it.
(Okay three options, what am I - the spanish inquisition?)
3. Get any bootdisk. Also download fdisk here: http://www.23cc.com/free-fdi=
sk/
put it onto the same floppy (if it fits) or a different floppy...
Option three might help the most - from the sound of things it
supports up to 180Gb drives - you may not be able to get all your
money's worth out of the 200Gb drive, but it's better than nothing.
And hey - you can install linux on the remaining part of the
drive.
I'm not sure I'm getting all of this though... You're saying you're
unable to install win98 off the CD? Could be your bios isn't set to
boot from the CD drive - if you have a P4 the mobo MUST support CD
booting - have a poke in the bios menu? If this doesn't work, then try
the above things.

Rumour has it that Win98's fdisk, or SE's,, depending on drive geometry, can
totally screw up anything over 64 gigs.
MS issued a new fdisk, around May, 2000, that supposedly fixed this.

For such a big harddrive, you need at least winxp sp1. Windows xp with no sp
does only detect ~140gb. Then (I think) win98 supports nothing bigger than 32gb,
or something like that. I dunno about win2000.

No, win98 supports at least 120Gb - that's what my secondary drive is.
If there's any limitation it'll be in the fat32 filesystem - and that
alternate fdisk utility apparently supports up to at least 180Gb.
Kat, I know you're a proponent of the older operating systems... any
reason not to run win2000 though? I use it on my other box, and it's a
lot easier to do things with - especially when you are debugging
anything that involves multiple processes.
