1. Make Money Writing Euphoria Programs

Are there any programs that can be written in Euphoria that could make money.
I know a good game would sell, but I was wondering if other types of software
sell as well. Like word processors or some other useful tools.

You gotta study the market niche(s). I came across this web site today:

   http://www.smosh.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2389&st=0

Those categories have great free software, so I suspect it would be hard to
crack one of those with a for-pay program. I think the best thing would be
to find a program that businesses can't be without and sell to them.

Or try these for some ideas:

http://www.ask.com/w#ch=web&pg=1&q=software%20next%20big%20thing&qsrc=1&rnd=1176171326125

The point is, you can make money writing programs in Euphoria, just like you
can make money writing programs in any language. The primary concern is
determining what people need and filling that void... or making the better
mousetrap.

I think the best option right now is to create software for businesses. You
can sell the software as well as support contracts. Businesses expect to have
to buy software, whereas individuals expect to be able to find free software.

3. Re: Make Money Writing Euphoria Programs

IMHO, there is very little a single person can write and profit from,
especially using only your spare time to write it.

I'm in the process of creating a large-scale spare-time-only project
with some local friends, and we may eventually profit from it, but its
going to be months or years in the making.

But its possible... the only issue I've has so far is telling people
"I wrote this in Euphoria" and I get a deer-in-headlights look back.
So I stopped telling them that. If I hand them a packaged installer
they never know the difference. Once they see that it works, *then* I
tell them its Euphoria. :)

Yeah, When I tell someone that I'm codeing in euphoria I get comments like
"did you run a debugger on it?", "C libraries are much better". So I smile back
and say "yeah it's been debugged".

If only they knew how easy it was to create programs in euphoria... lol

Euphoria rocks!

Certainly. You might do well to keep an eye on this forum:
http://discuss.joelonsoftware.com/?biz

It's populated entirely by =B5ISV people. 1 or 2 man software development=

companies. They discuss business ideas, development platforms, legal and=

tax issues, and much more.

One theme emerges time and again when discussing business ideas. There
has to be a real need for your product, and the best way to find that is=

to think of something that *you* need. Make that product, then figure
how you can sell it to others.

Good luck!

6. Re: Make Money Writing Euphoria Programs

Interesting topic?...

Greg I would have to disagree with your statement "there is very little a single
person can write and profit from, especially using only your spare time to write
it". There are many software applications written by individuals in their spare
time, and these individuals have profited from their hard work.

But the issue is not what programming language you use, but exactly what you are
planning on developing. CK made a very good point that companies expect to pay
for software while home consumers expect to get software for free. The problem
with developing business software is credibility. Most large companies will not
purchase software from an unknown developer. Companies are not going to risk
investing in purchasing software from a developer who might not be around in
another year or two.

I have personally developed both business and home/entertainment software and
marketing both successfully is very difficult. Why should a potential customer
buy your software when he/she can go to any download site and find something
similar for free? Free software is both good and bad. Good for the consumer, bad
for developers who are trying to compete with developers of freeware.

My publishing partner has done a fairly decent job selling my product Nexus
Radio, but Nexus Radio would sell significantly better if there wasn't free
alternatives. So taking a page out of Google's book, I have decided the next
version of Nexus Radio will be completely free. Instead of charging the consumer
we will charge advertisers a fee to run ads directly through the Nexus Radio
player. Unfortunately this business model can't work with every type of software
product, but it has worked very well for several products in the past.

But to answer your original questions, yes you can make money developing
software/games using Euphoria. I have made a decent living the past 7 years
developing software with Euphoria fulltime with no other "side jobs", so I know
from experience it is very possible.
