Tom,
be sure to make a backup copy of your original .bashrc, and check if you have
some character based file browser like 'mc' installed in your */bin (mine is in
/usr/bin) before changing it.
On my pure Debian, which is not -exactly- Ubuntu, but quite close, I had to
reinstall the original /home/*/.bashrc, because Matt's changes caused my X login
to hang, while the character based was ok (ctrl-alt-F1).
I don't know why, I'll try to understand where the hiccup is in my case (my
fault somewhere, quite possibly).
