Hello,
"If you think it's a Russian greeting, then your rendition is full of
careless mistakes, on par with your other contributions."
My "contributions" were nothing of the sort! I am a beginner =
programmer, I mean total beginner. Euphoria is the first language I have =
ever used, and therefore, I have some problems. Anyone would have =
problems when they just start programming. So, my programs are not =
correct all the time. They are not contribtutions; they are files I have =
sent for help.=20
As far as "Das Svendanya" goes, it really isn't important. I thought =
it was a sort of "goob-bye" statement that is more amusing to say than =
'see you later'. I was simply trying to be creative.
"Please, correct me, if I am wrong. Otherwise feel discouraged."
I would feel discouraged if I was a spineless worm, but I am not. =
Therefore I will continue to make creative comments and programs I am =
having problems with. If I simply hit a nerve, with my "Das Svendanya", =
I have a question. Is it really that important?

Thomas,
Sorry to butt in, but -nerve or not- I think Jiri's right, even if he =
may not be the most tactful person around.
As far as "Das Svendanya" goes, it really isn't important. I =
thought it was a sort of "goob-bye" statement that is more amusing to =
say than 'see you later'. I was simply trying to be creative.
<snip>
I have a question. Is it really that important?
-----Thomas
-----/\=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D
"Das Svendanya" isn't really important in itself. Few things are. =
Personally, I'm inclined to congratulate you on your creative greeting =
style. I'm not being ironic, all these Hellos and Byes do get boring.
But I agree with Jiri on the sloppiness side of the matter, and this is =
a definitely not off-topic question. Programming is for creative people, =
yes, but creative doesn't mean anything goes as long as it's original. I =
can understand you even if your spelling isn't exact; a compiler or =
interpreter can't.
Being a beginner (something you need never be ashamed of; the oldest and =
most experienced obviously started their careers as beginners, too!) you =
probably have never had to employ natural language in a precise and =
unambiguous way. As in writing reports for your employers, project =
descriptions for your investors, or manuals for your users. I assure you =
that any mistake can be very, very costly, for you and for others.
I spent many years working with manuals and 'explain' files written in =
English by French programmers. Their spelling was impeccable, their =
syntax was not. Many times I had to translate whole paragraphs into =
French, just to understand what they meant. Natural languages, imperfect =
and confusing as they are, can be as precise and meaningful as you want =
them to be. It's a joy to make them work for you.
Have time for an anecdote? Your own "Das Svendanya" (however it's =
written, I won't even try Cyrillic) was part of the dialogue in a movie =
I once saw. The English (and Spanish) subtitles correctly translated the =
expression as "To your health" (sorry, Jiri, but "vita" in Russian means =
"health"). But I also saw the movie trailer, where the translator =
probably hadn't the faintest idea about the movie's argument, =
characters, etc., didn't even understand it was a Russian expression, =
and translated it as if they'd said ... "That's for Daniel." Who the =
heck was Daniel, anyway? No Daniels around, not even Jack Daniels, =
more's the pity.
Such things can happen.
Gerardo
