1. Re: Win32Lib mailing list + DOS/Windows/Linux debate
"If" new lists are to be created there should be one for each Euphoria
platform.
Dos,
Windows, and
Linux
with this current list kept for generic discussion and "major" annoncements
from any platform.
For example,
If I finished a project (probably never happen!!!) I would post a message
to the main list. If I had problems/small changes/bug fixes etc I would
post to the appropriate platform list.
The question really becomes ... would most people subscribe to all the
lists?
If the answer is ... most people would ... maybe we should have a posting
standards where [WIN] [DOS] [LIN] [GEN] (like the archive) should be in the
subject line to easily allow people to filter appropriate messages.
This standard should then be added to the Welcome message sent to a new
user.
Re the Windows/Dos/Linux debate, (ie my 2 cents on platform usage)
DOS is slowly dying, anyone who says otherwise is living in a hole.
I'm not saying it's dead, but fewer and fewer people are writing new
software for the DOS platform. There are still many many programs
available but very few people are interested anymore. I should also say I
think it's much more stable and resource friendly than Windows! It also
lacks integration between products and many applications use different GUI
standards making it difficult for users.
Windows is the monster of the desktop market, "almost" everyone uses it and
the majority of software companies develop software for Windows (or) have
to factor it into development/deployment plans. For desktop computers where
a reset here and there isn't the end of the world it does an alright job.
IMHO MS Office is the product that has made MS. An OS is nothing without
applications ... which brings me to
Linux (or *nix in general)
Is the Old/New kid on the block, has been around as long as MS have been
but haven't had a feasible /affordable desktop envirnoment until recently.
I beleive Linux will slowly grow into the desktop arena to challange MS
(maybe take 5-10 years before we see a 10-30% market share) and as it does
the already blossiming desktop applications software will only improve and
increase.
In Euphoria terms DOS usage will decrease, Windows will keep the same high
level of usage and Linux will grow.
It would be interesting for someone (maybe me???) to do a poll so everyone
can vote for their Euphoria platform usage/expected usage?
So we can actually gauge what people are using Euphoria for???
Maybe the survey can start with:
---------
What platforms do you currently use?
What platforms do you plan to use?
What other platforms would you like to see Ephoria ported to?
What types of applications do you / would you like to use Euphoria for
(Games/Business Applications/Utilities etc)
-----------
well that better be enough for today
Kepp well
