Have a look in http://www.rapideuphoria.com/gra.htm Download a few examples and try to figure out how the ones you like work. When you get stuck, then you can ask a specific question, which will get you a better answer than "how do graphics work?", which is basically unanswerable.
I suggest you start with the ray casting demo from hollow horse software, not stunningly great, but simple enough to understand.
