It really depends on the chipset. For some there are free drivers, for some you
have to pay for drivers and for some there are no drivers at all.
To find out what chipset you've got, check the output of lspci.

For what its worth, I found a Stratitec pci modem
with on board hardware DSP at WalMart - for
$25.
