1. free subdomains

Stephen--
I've already downloaded version 0.4, I love it, great work =)

anyways, for anyone who's interested, I have a whole list of free
subdomains as I run a page that has a huge list of free webpages,
http://freepages.freeservers.com, though it's in the process of being
redone. I'm in the process of slightly re-writing the HTML Parser that
RDS uses to create a searchable index of web pages, sorted by different
criteria.... anyways, enough blatant advertising (actually, it's not
really advertising since I don't have the page uploaded yet, but hey),
here's a nice big list, and the pros and cons:

www.freeservers.com
    + choice of many subdomains (freeservers.com, 8m.com,
bizhosting.com, faithweb.com, ourfamily.com and freehosting.net)
    + 12mb space
    - server is sometimes slow, though uptime is good

www.virtualave.net
    + CGI access
    + 20mb space
    + Fast, reliable server
    - annoying popup banner

www.hypermart.net
    + CGI access
    + pretty fast
    + great file managing utility
    - annoying BIG popup banner
    - meant for business sites, but it's not enforced

www.webjump.com
    + CGI
    - absolutely hideous top-frame ad

www.server101.com
    + fast, reliable
    - popup ad

My recommendation is Server101, as it's fast and reliable, which is
important. If you want CGI, Hypermart comes *highly* recommended, as
it's fast and reliable, but you do run the risk of having your page
removed because it isn't a business site, however unlikely.

If you need a server to host a more specialized site, with any number
different features (SSL, more space, free email address, no advertising
[rare], etc.) just tell me, I'll give you a list that meet your needs,
as best I can. They may not be subdomains, if that's important to you
(but they're almost guarunteed to have a shorter URL than any Geocities
sites out there)

anyways, have fun
Greg

Useless fact of the day:

It was discovered on a space mission that a frog can throw up. The frog
throws up it's
stomach first, so the stomach is dangling out of it's mouth. Then the
frog uses it's
forearms to dig out all of the stomach's contents and then swallows the
stomach back down
again.
