"Cheers" is a way of saying goodbye. It is used mainly in parts of Britain, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. It has some connotation of wishing good fortune, and is certainly a friendly 'goodbye'. I got into the habit of saying it after working for six-months in Johannesburg in 2000.
