As 'ugly' as it may seem, I'm sure it's going to be the 'simplest way'.

I've had some success with accessing Excel through COM using EuCOM.
However, my experience is that Excel's (Excel97--haven't tried with 2000 or
XP) COM interface is somewhat buggy.  I used to have problems with it from
VB/VBA, and saw the same ones with EuCOM.
