This is a good point, Mike. It should be easy enough to fix this in the
library.

To summarize:

  When the library calculates the client area, it should only consider
visible toolbars and visible statusbar. 

Note, it will still be up to the application to reposition any controls that
would be effected by hiding and showing these bars. In other words, if you
hide a toolbar, the library won't automatically shift controls up into the
newly revealed area.
