Did you use back-ticks?
A forward-tick (AKA single quote) gives the error message about
no such file or directory.

Run them from an xterm. You should see some kind of error message.
I have not ever had "nothing" happen. There's always either a Euphoria
error message or a GTK error message, or worse case, a "segmentation"
violation from the OS.
