1. Off Topic:Moving to Linux

Hola,

I have heard a little about WinLinux..Some good, some not... Has anyone used
it?? I am planing on installing a version of linux but am unsure as to what
the 'best' option would be. I plan to dual boot it win 95. i have 500m free
space on a drive to do so... the last time i used linux it was RedHat 5.1,
For a full install it wanted 1.6 gb of space... Also the drive with free
space is the secondary master, I ~think~ that was a problem with rh5.1, dont
remember now....
Any advice would be very welcome...

I installed WinLinux on my laptop. It worked fairly well, except it did
not detect my video card properly. It froze when it automatically
started X-Windows. Since WinLinux uses a UMSDOS root partition, I was
able to edit inittab from Windows and change the runlevel from 4 to 3,
so it did not start X-Windows. I was then able to setup X-Windows
manually.

I like the idea behind WinLinux, but I had other problems besides its
hardware detection. It doesn't provide any tools to easily configure the
system like Red Hat does (there's no Xconfigurator, sound config
program, printer tool etc.), and I had problems using RPM with it. It
seems that the packages aren't registered somehow, so even though the
files are there, it doesn't know that the package is installed.

I recompiled the kernel several times, and it worked fine for a while.
Eventually, however, WinLinux just stopped working. I tried reinstalling
it, and I couldn't get it to work. The problem might have been with my hard
drive, which failed shortly after.
