1. [OT] Gmail invites
Hooray for gmail!
I've been burdened with 5 invites to give out to people - if you are
using webmail, trust me - Gmail stomps all over it, it is simply the
best mail interface I've ever seen, plus automatic threading makes
being on a busy list like this one much much easier.
If you'd like a Gmail account, just reply to this message with your
name and an email to send the invite to.

Call me paranoid, but I use my own SMTP server 'cos I don't want
third parties keeping copies of my emails, so Gmail is not going to
be doing business with me.

For those with their own mail servers, that's fine. For those on
webmail, I'd say Gmail is much better than any other free webmail out
there.
I'd set up my own SMTP server, but if all the messages are on my home
machine, then it dies, and ??

Quite right. But how do you manage that ... LittlePond cut off
outgoing port 25 transmission a few months back?

I don't have enough hard drive space for production, let alone backups...
Plus I haven't had enough time to set up my own domain or learn how yet...

I know there are privacy concerns - and I know that google isn't the
perfect company...
But other companies do this already - Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL... without
even telling you. "Residual copies of email may remain on our systems,
even after you have deleted them from your mailbox or after the
termination of your account" - I'd say that's just a disclaimer,
because the GMail servers would be backed up regularly. Can you
imagine having to cascade back across hundreds of backups just to
delete data from a closed account, or a deleted message?
I think that all this brouhaha is just because Google is honest enough
to tell people what they're doing - all the other companies do it, and
don't tell anyone.
