i have a problem: i have no disk space on my computer (800HDD)
=20
is there any program like drivespace3 which is for 32-bit FAT, on the =
net?
if i change my FAT to 16-bit, will this slow down computer?
how can i do this?
Has anybody any idea how can i free up some disk space?
How do i change letter of drive/cd-rom? (C,D)

Uninstall or delete anything you don't need and/or use. :)
Graphics and sound tend to take a lot of space.

I think you have to do that in the BIOS when your computer
boots up.

PS: I would ultimately suggest getting a bigger hard-drive
but I understand that they are expensive.

Should be something under start/programs/accessories/system on your desktop.

I wouldn't try changing it, it's not worth the risk of losing data while the
fats are being changed. If i were you, especially if you are worried about
speed, get a bigger newer hard drive, they are faster than what you have
now, fdisk/format it to 16bit fat, and transfer the old data to the new
drive, use the old drive for slow archive. If you can't afford a new hd,
look around for older puters being scrapped, you may be able to get the hds
for $5. The older the hd is, the slower, smaller, and less reliable it will
be.

1. Zip files that aren't used frequently.
UnZip them when needed.
You can Zip entire directories complete with directory
structure.
The following don't compress well:
Movies (AVI, MOV, MPG), most images (GIF and JPG),
Songs (MP3)
Candidates: Anything that runs from DOS, Games
Sounds types: MID, MOD and similiar, WAV, RAW, AU, VOC,
IT, XM, S3M, STM, DSM, MED, FAR, ULT, MTM, 669
Text sound lists: M3U, PLS, ASX
Text of any kind: TXT, DOC, WRI
2. Store the above types of data on removable media.
IE: Floppy, Zip, Syquest Jet, CD-Recordable,
CD-Read/Write, Optical Disk, Clik Disk, Tape backup
3. Store some data online instead of on your machine.
Internet charges may make this undesirable.
4. Clean out unneeded data. (tough job)
5. Get a bigger Hard drive. (Never regretted) can be expensive.
6. Maybe you could get a friend to burn a CD of much of your data.
suggestively requires: Network or removal of hard drive from
your system and put in theirs long enough to record the data.

stacker was included with DR-Dos 7, which was distributed (free) by caldera.
I think it is available at their site.

As a bit of side info, i seem to remember MS bought some rights to Stacker,
MS did Stacker wrong and the contract was canceled, Stacker sued, and MS had
to change either Drivespace or Doublespace. I stayed with Stacker untill i
could get one gig and bigger drives. I think i recall seeing "Stacker" in
one of the .com or .exe files in MS-DOS5 or 6, back when i was hacking dos
internals.

true. they included their own 'stacker' in dos 6.0 called doublespace; and
they were forced to change parts of it. this is why they released dos 6.2
with drivespace in place of doublespace.
In DR-Dos it is the true licensed original stacker. (but don't ask me the
version, I don't know)

I remember when I used to use IBM's PC-DOC 7.0 that it
came with Stacker 4.0. I remembered I tried to get
tech support and they didn't make Stacker anymore,
with the last version being either that or 5.0.

Here is the skinny from Stac, after the lawsuit:
In June of 1994, Stac and Micro$oft reached an agreement to share the Stac
patents for any new technology, and MS agreed to purchase $39.9 million
worth of Stac stock and pay Stac $1million per month for the right to use
Stac in MS's Doublespace.
As usual, after MS gets their sights set on someone, that someone is out of
business.
MS's defrag tools for their versions didn't work right on the real Stacked
drives, and you should use the Stac toolbox's defrag on the stacked drives.
The last book i have on Stacker is dated 1995, it's for Multimedia Stacker,
running any DOS5+ and therefore win3.xx also.
