1. Linux vs. Winmodems

Yes, I know, this is a *Euphoria* forum, not *Linux* group, but I'm in a
grumpy mood because it's late, and I just found out I've been hosed by US
Robotics. Grrrr...

It turns out that the modem in my machine is a Winmodem - something that
apparently isn't really a modem at all, as much as a glorified sound card -
a modem gutted of it's DSP - with the real work being offloaded to my CPU.
This of course makes them *much* cheaper to manufacture, although though
they are priced only slightly less than a *real* modem.

Not being a *real* modem, it doesn't work in other operating systems, like
OS2, BeOS, Linux, and in some cases, even WinNT. In theory, people could
write drivers for these puppies, but no manufacturer is releasing specs on
them anyway.

Proof, I guess, that you get what you pay for. Or in this case, you don't
get what you don't pay for.
