These are some routines that I wrote. Maybe they will help.
In the mean time I will be working on a palette resizing routine.
IE:
bmp = read_bitmap("picture.bmp")
resize_pal(bmp, 216)--frees up 40 colors
Unfortunately I haven't built the above yet.
