1. My New Website

I'm in the process of designing a new website for my car club - the
Michigan Merkur Owners Network. I'm now basically the club
owner/organizer and site admin/designer. The website is basically 100%
Euphoria, except for the images, which I did in Photoshop, and the
JavaScript I used for the rollover images. Oh, and the Cascading Style
Sheet for the appearance. But its all Euphoria driven and there is a
small "Powered by Euphoria" banner on each page. Right now the site is
just a skeleton, I have to start porting over information from the old
site. My contact/links page will have a link to the Euphoria website.
I'm also implementing a mailing list similar to our own, using Topica
and my own webinterface.

Check it out, give me some feed back. I'll have script-viewing script up soon.

My website ( http://cjbn.net ) also uses Euphoria. I havent finished
much though. Everything is written in Euphoria; the hitcounter,
the CGI scripts, the CGI plugin for the webserver, and even the
webserver itself!

CJBN, I wrote it, and it has nothing to do
with the CJBN TV network, or the previously
registered CJBN.net, that was just an odd
coincidence! And let's not forget:
Consiliu Judetean Bistrita-Nasaud and
Chris Jesus Believers Network...
Maybe I should have picked a better name,
or at least googled CJBN BEFORE using that name...

Also there is another CoJaBo(spelled "Cojabo",
mine is (supposed to be) spelled "CoJaBo")

I don't know... Most of that is handled by a DLL.
Currently it doesn't support all of HTTP, mainly because
I never even intended to have it support HTTP. It was origanally
designed to use my CJBN protocol, which can be used in network games.

10. Re: My New Website

Just a tip to those of you [Kat] who don't think Euphoria works with
Apache, or as CGI in general:

I figured out why my website wasn't working. I'm used to using Apache
2.x, which is what I test my site on locally. The server I use has
Apache 1.x. I guess my scripts (.exu files) must be chmod'ed to 755
and i had them as 775 which caused them to fail (on Apache 1.x only).
So I reset everything to 755 and all is good and working. I use gFTP
which allows me to chmod directly through FTP.

However, my images may not look right if JavaScript is not enabled.

I use Eu cgi on a number of websites now. I'm actually replacing all my old PHP
code with Euphoria code -- works fine. This wouldn't be appropriate for
everyone, however -- I would use PHP still if I was using MySQL, for instance.
I'm actually now running EDS as a local server (local to the web server). Then
the Eu script that generates the pages can connect to the Eu EDS server and
lookup db stuff, etc. This way only the one program ever needs to access the
actual EDS db files and there are no conflicts and it can synchonize the
requests. It also stays running all the time so db access is fast. I also have
wrappers to the RPMs for libcurl and pcre (regex) that I rely heavily on. For a
really heavy-duty database-driven (EDS probably wouldn't be appropriate if the db
was really big) I probably wouldn't use Euphoria, but it works great for most
things, and I can get things done so much faster because I am so comfortable with
Eu...

I once offered money on this list to get an Eu account working. No one got it
working. I offered RobC money, he didn't accept. So i paid someone on the
list to show me how easy php was, and i have been using php ever since. No
one on this list could make the Eu work. Php has had no chmod problems,
no ansi-ascii problems. It handles 50 terabytes (50Kx700x24x30 page grabs-
sends) per month on distributed servers.

I'm using Euphoria CGI on many different sites (in particular, my Euphoria
page: http://www.cklester.com/euphoria/), some on Windows boxes and some
on Linux boxes. My books (http://www.cklester.com/books/) are also being
served up by a custom euBook application (which I intend fix and enhance
someday).

I came into CGI as a newbie and it wasn't that difficult. The main problem
was getting Apache configured. (I also had it running on IIS at one point,
but I prefer Apache for security reasons.) If I have any problems these
days, it's because 1) permissions aren't set properly, 2) I forgot to
include a "without warning" and my program spews warnings, or 3) I haven't
saved the file in a "Unix-compatible" format (Linux only).

I'm guessing that Euphoria is faster than PHP, in both execution time and,
for me, development time. Anybody know otherwise?

PHP is a simplier solution because it is preinstalled on the systems.
Euphoria must be installed on each system. It must then be properly
configured. Apparently, what works on Mandrake doesn't work
the same for gentoo and gentoo doesn't work like SUSE and ....
I hope you get the picture. She doesn't have to configure PHP for
every single system. Just drop the files as you would HTML files.
Add another remote server? Just drop the files in.
With Euphoria you would have to install and setup Euphoria for
each server. A minor amount of understanding of file permissions
and possibly folder structure is required for Euphoria CGI to
be setup on linux.

unkmar - king of the ... nah, just another person. :/

Well, for a year, the nix gurus on this list who would help could not get Eu
working in a nix shell.

I wasn't a 'nix guru last year. Its amazing what one can learn in a
matter of months. I've had two Linux classes in the past 6-8 months,
and I've setup Linux servers on Red Hat 9, Mandrake 9.1 and Fedora
Core 2. All have used Euphoria for CGI. I think I've done it enough
times now that I finally get it. I've literally got a 'stack' of Linux
books sitting next to my desk.
