about extensions- <snip> >Previously I tried naming the file with .tgz file type, and >that's fine, except that some versions of Netscape >think that .tgz is a "text" file, and so the line terminators are >changed, and the file will always be corrupted when it's >downloaded. Isn't it possible to configure netscape correctly instead of giving an unacurate extension? (Just a question:I didn't try) >I could use the .tar.gz extension that seems >to be the standard in the Linux world, but I find the >file name gets mangled when downloading to DOS/Windows, >for instance Internet Explorer changes "euphor22.tar.gz" >into "euphor22_tar.tar", so you still end up with a .tar file >after downloading, plus the name is wrong. IMO what happens in dos/windows to a file that can't be used in dos/windows has no importance- if you download it with netscape/windows, before using it on linux you can easily rename it. But if you access from linux, it is correct. As a rule, I prefer that everything linux-specific would follow the general naming habits. Just as you pointed out: people don't read instructions. th only way to get rid of this is to give a stupid name, so that you're forced to rename it after downloading- and to read the instruction!
