1. Zip and unzip

Hello everybody!

I'm terribly confused by zipping and unzipping. Can somebody please explain
them to me?

I know that a zipped document has been compressed to occupy less memory and
to transmit more readily by e-mail. I know that programs to do the zipping
and unzipping are available from various sources. However, I understood
that these programs were mutually compatible -- that a document zipped by a
program from one source could be unzipped by a program from a different
source. That is apparently not the case.

I zipped a document using pkzip and sent it to my daughter. She says she
can't unzip it. She likes something called Zipwhacker, and she mentioned
having tried several others.

Another message right behind this one about e-mail codes.

In theiry you're right... but in reality you can find that some applications
doesn't work as they should. Example, suppose you zipped a lot of stuff you
have in your PC with Win95 (including some long-filename files), and you
send that archive to your daughter... but she is running a plain DOS system.
You may guess something wrong will happen! The problem is that some programs
support certain "feautures" that others don't, so I recommed your daughter
(and you) to get the latest PKZIP/PKUNZIP (2.04g) from http://www.pkware.com
for DOS systems and the great WinZIP at http://www.winzip.com for Win95
systems. There are also free utilities (including source code! maybe someday
I can make them Euphoria) from the ZIP group.

Hi Wally,

Daniel's explanation is good; only one thing I'd like to add: the easiest=

thing to do is to make a self extracting ZIP file. Read the documentation=

how to do that. First you compress one or more files (data, programs,
whatever) into a file with the extension .zip. Then you make it into an
=2EEXE using some switch on the command line of your program. The recipie=
nt
doesn't have to use any unpacking program, as the unpacking information a=
nd
program are incorporated!

Hope this helps

Reading this again, I see quite some words you could call confusing.
I used some words that are functionally synonymous: compress, pack and zi=
p
on the one side, and extract, unpack and unzip on the other!

Hope this helps even more

I use Zipwhacker, among others, and have had no trouble. Perhaps the file
arrived corrupted. If you e-mailed it, try e-mailing a copy to yourself,
and unzipping it. That should narrow down the problem.

I should say, save a copy somewhere before you attempt the unzip -- wouldn't
want to zap the original now, would we?
