1. New to the NET with Euphoria from a dialup on a 233mhz laptop

Hello all,

I setup a server on my laptop and stuck a few little pages on there
one of these is the libcgi demo by Buddy Hyllberg just to test this
thing out some. Im using a dial-up connection so it will be pretty slow.
I will be online tonight for a couple more hours (its 12:15 a est)
and back on tommorrow around 1:00 pm est. Would someone let
me know if I have this setup correctly?

Im back up for a little while if any one wants to give it a try

Mind you its slow a sin but Im only using this to test if I have Euphoria
setup correct to run from a server. Then Ill use it to test my pages
when I ever get them finished. I'll write most of the code in Euphoria!

My mainframe 386 25Mhz 8M RAM Windows 95 OSR2 Russian IE3.02
catches your server on dial-up connection 33.6 in 10 seconds
in St.Petrsburg, Russia. !!!!! Good news !!!!! No ?????

Thanks Igor,

You didnt get to run the euphoria CGI example code because your browser "I
dont think" supports CSS or JavaScript so, I'll need to change this stuff around
so everyone can run the Euphoria Scripts.

When I change this stuff would you give it another shot Igor?
It might take me a little while, I think the Wife has me doing something
like going shopping or something really boring soon...

Thanks again,

Oh, and Telnet and MUD/MUSH client (including doing the ascii-ansi-ascii
conversions, and providing a room and global nicklist, so you could use your
irc color popups in the MUD)

Shopping isn't boring! What you need is a good remote-controlled robot, full
3D gui interaction with it (written in Eu, running linux, naturally), and also
shell out to places you find worthwhile when you "goto" the boring places.

Kat,
waiting to see the robot smile

Hey Ray,

Im working on this.

I think Ive found one, "BTI" Im talking to them this week.
Ive been looking at the code it would take to do this
and I truely cant see using Euphoria for anything other than
database operations. Maybe you would give me some ideas
to present to "BTI"..?

13. Re: New to the NET with Euphoria from a dialup on a 233mhz laptop

There seems to be a vague notion out there
that to use Euphoria for CGI you must get
a Web host to agree to install Euphoria
on their system, or you must get their
permission before you can use it.

In my case, RapidEuphoria.com is hosted
on some Web host's FreeBSD machine. It's not my machine.
I have set up various Euphoria programs for
CGI and for other things. I did not ask my Web host
to install anything, nor did I ask their permission
to run Euphoria. For CGI, I can run interpreted Euphoria programs
using:
#!./exu
on the top line of my program. I can run bound Euphoria
programs, and I can run translated-to-C and compiled
Euphoria programs. All I do for CGI is put the Euphoria program
into my cgi-bin directory, and set the permissions
correctly. It's also convenient to have exu in there.
If a Web host will let you run a C program,
then they shouldn't care if you run a Euphoria program.
After all, the Euphoria interpreter *is* a C program.
Your code is just data for the interpreter.

I've now written Perl programs, C programs and Euphoria
programs for CGI. There's no comparison in terms
of ease of development. With C my Web host doesn't
allow any core files to be dumped, so there are 0 diagnostics
when the C CGI program fails. The same is true with Perl.
With Euphoria, I get a full ex.err file left in cgi-bin, and
it's usually very easy to see what went wrong and to correct it.
I can also turn on profiling and look at the ex.pro file.
I also have a cron job that runs every hour and it's written
in Euphoria. If something goes wrong, it leaves an ex.err
file, and I get the Euphoria error diagnostics that normally
would appear on the screen, e-mailed to me by the system.
When it was written in C, I'd get "core dump" e-mailed to me,
and then there was no core file to be found.

I'm using addr.com as my Web host.
For $10 U.S. / month I get a login account,
FTP access, 100Mb of space and 4Gb of bandwidth per month.
They seem to be at the very low end of price, but they are
fairly reliable. I'm currently running at 140Mb of space
and 5Gb, but no one has asked me to cough up more money.

If I didn't have a login account, I might still be
able to run Euphoria CGI programs by storing
exu in cgi-bin along with my Euphoria CGI programs.
I'm not sure though. The host has a lot of controls they
can use to restrict access, and control resources
used by CGI programs. For instance I discovered
that programs on this host are limited to 8Mb of
virtual memory (I tried to use ed on a huge file).

15. Re: New to the NET with Euphoria from a dialup on a 233mhz laptop

Thanks Euler,

There is a bug in IE5 & 5.5 dealing with box drawing with CSS
I'll need to fix this because the Eumans's Programming Sign is
not showing correctly in the images you sent.

As for Opera, Im going to have to D/L that Browser to check things
out. I did run all of the .htm files thru W3C checks to insure compatability
but obviously Opera doesnt meet that standards completely or I inadvertnly
changed something after I made the check that messed things up.

I really wish all the browsers were standardized the way they should be.
I think the pages show correct with NS6+ and IE6+ and most of the
people out there use one of the two.

I'll check these out. Thanks again!

Hello Euman!

Your page worked ok on IE5.5. Failed on Opera6.01. Screenshots
attached. As I'm not sure if this will go through Topica I'm sendig it
also to you, personally. Sorry for any double hit.
