    I actually want to take the time to learn C. I had previously
downloaded and installed EGCS and..... And I couldn't the the $*#@ thing
to work. I fought with the piece of #*$% for a short time until I decided
it just wasn't worth my time.

    I still have desire to learn C. I have programs that I can get FREE
source to but can't get in compiled format that I want to compile in C. But
if I have to FIGHT with the $*#@ Compiler then the whole $*#@ lot can just
kiss my @$$.

        Sincerely,
        Lucius L. Hilley III

   Lucius:

   Go to borland and download this free compiler. It comes with a

   IDE ( integrated development enviorment ). Using this will make it

   easy for you to learn to use "C". There are many samples and tutorials

   out on the web. I can't see how someone as talented as you are in

   Euphoria can't learn "C".

   I found , as others may of , that until you get feedback from an
 actual ansi type C compiler , there's little incentive to learn C.
  Even with this established one needs to be persistent while learning the
 subtlties that can result in a system crash.
   The PCC compiler is the most straightforward version I know of ;
  refer Listserv for details.

    The recipe that works for me , PCC , ansi C text ; h.schildt -
  teach yourself C. also a few shell" " calls from quickbasic , or
  equivalently system() calls from euphoria , or a batch file to interface
  to something like the enhanced version of EDIT.

    Pcc , like other C-compilers , isn't 100% ansi compatible ; going
 through the ansi-C text however , I'm able to build up a number of examples
 that are and can be compiled from within Pcc. The variations aren't great ,
  yet these need to be documented. Things like gets() for instance , rather
 than getche().
  Once the documentation ,to go with Pcc, is complete and the examples are
 completed then I can revise ; yet again what I learn't.
  This certainly is an improvement on the course I attended at a local
 Polytechnic , on C coding , a few years ago.

   Eventually a larger compiler might be considered , presently though
  there's enough to keep me busy.

   If anyone wants the details , send me a message.

5. Re: GCC / EGCS

I also use pcc, I found it at simtel.net. It is not ansi, but
"Kernighan&Ritchie" compatible, like the cc compiler I used on Sun stations.
What is great is that it works even on PC-XT, no need to have a >386
processor... I use it on my HP 200LX palmtop in the train.

     K&R <--> ansi
   The differences aren't that great , a little software and you can
 translate between the two , a lookup table ; for substitutions might
 suffice.
   You could put this Compiler in rom and run the whole thing from
  ram , on a palmtop this is probably what you do anyway.
   I use my ramdrive , as a temporary drive for pcc, this makes everything
 that much faster and saves on disk accesses . When the file I'm
 editing/compiling runs correctly ; I save that to the hdd.
  Pcc uses the classical approach to passing parameters to functions
 though , there are a few other peculiarities , unsigned long doesn't
 appear to be supported ; something else also.....
