you can write a fairly large file(say 800K), read it back, and time both actions, divide by the size of the file in bytes and voila! you've got your trasnfer rate plus OS overhead C. K. Norton had a great system performance tester, back before Windoze 3.1. It tested *everything* on a dos box, and showed you where programs loaded, did memory dumps, who had what interrupts, etc..
