Oh bloody marvellous. 475K of likely crap. One, I set my mail reader to
reject message longer than 200k. BUT two, my ISP is such that
I have to download it eventually. Otherwise I get the same
message everytime I check my mail.

Good bye, I'm signing off this list.

I think this is an interesting point - surely there is a way for the list
administrator to not distribute files with attachments - after all we should
all upload our files and supply links for reasons exactly like this!

Pete King.

4. Re: This is a virus. Please run it.

After this new mail with an EXE attached, I have set up a
rule not to download files larger than 50 K from my
mail server.

So please don't attach source files larger than this to your
mails.

Jean-Marc

5. Re: This is a virus. Please run it.

I'm pretty sure your Email program can be set to delete from server
without having to download the message.

6. Re: This is a virus. Please run it.

The easiest way to handle this is to set your mail client to not download
large messages. Then, once in a while, telnet to your mail server and delete
those large messages. No need to download or read them.

How do you do it in Outlook Express?

I use Outlook Express Version 5.x. I can safely say that with my
version I can set the following Message Rules.

Condition:
"Where the message size is more than size" then set your max size in
KB.
Action:
"Do not Download it from server"

Condition:
"Where the message size is more than size" then set your max size in
KB.
Action:
    "Delete it from server"

I am under the impression that in older versions of Outlook Express you
would move these to the bottom of your rules list to ensure that they are
executed first but in my version I had to move them to the top. For me,
when they were at the bottom Outlook Express tried to download the message.
I, of course, was very mean to Outlook Express and disconnected from the
Internet.
Simply hitting cancel doesn't stop the message downloading. Outlook
thinks it should complete the download of the current message before
canceling. In the words of the famous Jar Jar binks "How Wude ?!?!"...
Translates to "How Rude ?!?!"
