1. Offtopic: Free File Manager Replacement

I hope that most of you won't think that this is off topic. I have looked at
about 30 different replacements for Windows Explorer and all the decent
ones cost money...something that I never seem to have enough of. Also,
I use a file viewer and a zip manager. Both of those are reasonably well
integrated with WE. Well this one views over 80 file formats and will do
some file conversions. It also has a zip manager that will also handle about
every other compression format found on the web...and a few that most
of you will never have heard of. This one is Power Desk Utilities by Ontrack,
and it usually costs money( and of course, they have a pro version for money,
but you don't need it). ZDNET has put it on it's Launchpad for the next
48 hours or maybe more(that varies somewhat). After that, who knows
whether it will be free. It is a medium download of 1.13 meg. Here is the
url.

Enjoy.

Thanks Rett:

I'am downloading it now and I will try it.

Are you aware that BORLAND has a free download of BCC-5.5

command line C++ compiler and support utilities at there Web Site.

This has to be used from the command line but it has everything

need to do C++ programming in DOS\WINDOWS. I'am sure that some smart

Euphoria programmer could easily write an IDE for it in Euphoria.

Rob could even use it to write Euphoria.

Thanks,
Already have the BCC, having been a long term monitor of all things Borland.
Never could justify the price of Delphi, but I really like the utilities and
other
things that I see written in it(things like Gary's lamented IDE). Have always
needed a decent C/C++ and this is certainly one. I keep finding things to
like about the Power Desk Utilities. It has the old split pane view that
file manager had under Win31 and it has the drive icons across the top.
Since I run drives out thru V not counting my CD on Z, this is a major
convenience for me. Also, hitting F9 opens/closes a file viewer pane
across the bottom. On the compression side, it even opens up cab files.
I have a separate cab file viewer, but it sure is nice not to have to shift
gears to look at one of MS's troglodytic compressed items. This thing is
going to relegate about five of my regular utilities to the "use only
occasionally" list. About the only file utility that I will still need is the
cKrename utility that allows me to do group renames in all sorts of
interesting ways.

I downloaded it twice and used PKUNZIP and PKZIP for Win on
both. They said: No files!

  Am I doing something wrong?

  Thanks for any tips.

Did you see this?:

a port of Delphi from windoze to linux, by Inprise/Borland.
/me envisions Billy Gates screaming in pain as he shrinks. It's just one
more nail.

Saw and read the initial announcement that came along with the Corel/
Inprise merger, but hadn't tracked since. Delphi is a major tool for
quick and clean development. When they actually deliver it, I will
probably have to do some major pocket searching to see if I can come
up with the bucks. That kind of cross-platform power is going to
attract lots of attention and hopefully a pile of developers over from
Windows to Linux. In addition, a lot of programs will probably make
a very fast jump to Linux. I think that Billy boy knew how badly this
one could hurt when he tried to destroy Borland the first time. He did
seriously wound them, but it appears that Phoenix-like they are
resurgent.

A while back, MS offered lead developers at Borland
absolutely obscene amounts of money to jump ship...sometimes with
huge signing bonuses and large paid sabbaticals. As is obvious, the
purpose was not to obtain the talent...talent like that can do little
useful in a maze like MS. The purpose was to cripple Borland, and it
drew a lawsuit with an out-of-court settlement, with the damage already
done. Since then, Borland...to Inprise...to Corel/merger. I hope that
this represents the end of the downward arc and the beginning of
some much deserved revenge on MS. I'm sure that I here Philippe Kahn
snickering somewhere in the background.
