I was wondering what is the best way to install a program so that it runs on
startup automatically.

Place a shortcut to the program in Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Actually, this is language dependent. On Swedish windows installations this is
Start-menyn\Program\Autostart (or similar, at least it's something like this).
It's probably different in other languages as well. I'd suggest putting a
registry key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
(or in the corresponding key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER if you only want it for one of
or some of the users).
