Generally speaking, if a virus warning doesn't come directly from CERT or a
similar responsible organization, it's a hoax - especially if it makes
totally ridiculous claims like ruining memory and sound cards, and
infecting mice and keyboards.
He should have verified it first. The mailings can be checked easily on
several antivirus companies' web sites. Symantec is only one example.
This makes at least half a dozen (useless) postings on this topic.
These virus warnings are actually "human engineering viruses" in the way
they invoke fear beyond reason. Most recipients don't know enough about
computers to realize that the claims being made are irrational.
Hmm, I guess I should also add, judging by the traffic on this list alone,
that it was quite effective...
