1. help contribute: updating Euphoria installation documentation

Forked from Re: Experimental Debian Package

After installing Euphoria on Ubuntu, I started to think about installation in general.

Pete, thanks for pointing out installu.doc. That is the last thing I would think of reading!

My view of an Ubuntu install is different from my personal manual Euphoria installation. The installu.doc no longer matches up with my expectations of an Ubuntu install. The information there should not be needed to install Euphoria. (Suggests separate installu.doc for Ubuntu and general installations.)

So, an update to the documentation on installing Euphoria is needed.

To start, I'm asking for ideas on what to write and how to organize topics:

For an Ubuntu install I could expect:

  • everything installed after one click
  • documentation and demos available and work
  • no user intervention needed to see Euphoria "work"

(so, when I discover GNU ed conflicts with Euphoria ed, my brain stops...)

For a Windows install:

  • it should be as easy as an Ubuntu install
  • choice of with/without watcom

How many Unix install methods to be supported?

  • deb
  • rpm
  • tgz
  • lzm

Installing from a Unix tgz file:

  • I expect to read the install.doc
  • I expect to choose my install location
    • I prefer a mirror of the svn rather than the traditional Unix layout
    • I don't feel bad about installing to /root
    • I don't feel bad about running as root
  • I will find the documentation (and maybe demos) separately?

For a bleeding edge install:

  • tell me about SVN
  • tell me to install Tortoise
  • tell me where to get a precompiled binary
  • notes about bat, profile and .cfg files
  • tell me how to create documentation from source

Euphoria "ed":

  • handy way to to process and .err file
  • still an interesting demo
  • still useful in testing small programs and demos
  • wanted, a gui equivalent
  • ed still relevant?

Extent of install:

  • as a beginner or evaluator
    • complete package
    • install with one click
    • easy removal
  • as an expert
    • lots of choice
    • demos could be optional
    • gui, docs can be separate

The logical next step after installing Euphoria is:

  • pick a gui
  • pick a code editor

I could use some insight on how best to use the Euphoria .cfg files...
