1. Forked: should Euphoria logo use "Open"?

Forked from Re: Euphoria Logo Contest, will you participate?
Do we want to use the word Open ?
Jeremy
I don't have a preference I don't know about others.
Any opinions? Does the word "open" differentiate this project from "old" closed Euphoria? Even the previous two versions, 3.0 and 3.1, are open-sourced. The only question I would see is whether RDS has a trademark on "Euphoria" that Rob doesn't want to share and I doubt that that is the case.

Open can have MANY different interpretations. We don't want to give any wrong ideas do we?

To me, the language is still simply "Euphoria". This website is "OpenEuphoria". Rob's website is "RapidEuphoria". Someone else could start "ExtremeEuphoria" or something similar. All of these would be websites directed towards Euphoria the programming language. So the question then becomes... do we need a logo for the "OpenEuphoria" website, or the "Euphoria" programming language?
IMHO, if we want a "primary" website for Euphoria, it should be euphoriaprogramming.org. Hmm... I do have some GoDaddy space I'm not using. Perhaps a domain registration is in order...

Maybe you can port the archive to euphoriaProgramming.org

The problem there is that I'm not too good with "committing" to things and "maintaining" them over time.

Please don't use "Open." Just "Euphoria."
Or some other name we collectively decide on.
I vote for "TooL."

The "open" part appears unnecessary to me.
In fact, I think a whole new name might be in order. Who else gets funny looks from other developers when they say they use Euphoria? I have had outright: "you use WHAT? what the hell is that?" He almost seemed offended by the notion. I think he might have thought it was a street drug.
Cheers, Nick.

I don't see how it's any different from other noun-based language names, like Ruby or Python.

Its not about what other developers think its about using a language that fits your needs. Many people (and im guilty of this to) seem to think that they are '1337' with major programming skills because they use de fecato lanuage x. eg.c and all its variants 'java,c#...'.
Also you would get the same reaction if you asked the developer if he ever coded in RPG.

Rubies and pythons are solids things. You can throw rubies and eat pythons. Can you throw or eat euphoria? No.
I rest my case.

You are quite right about need but I thought we were interested in improving Euphoria's image. Generating good first impressions IMHO might help make it more mainstream. Surely that's part of the reason for the new icon?
BTW, RPG makes me think of Dungeons & Dragons. Is it for role playing games? if so, it is a perfect name. Plus, I doubt it would evoke such an emotive response from deadpan Denny.
Cheers, Nick.

It's still a noun. I can have a ruby or a python. I can also have euphoria.

It depends on if you are trying to sell your use of Euphoria for your next work project or not.

Yeah. Consider these:
"I program in C." "I program in assembly." "I program in Euphoria." "I program in TooL." "I program in Your Mom's Basement." "I program in Xtatic." "I program in Python." "I program in C."
Notice that all of these have FEWER than 4 syllables. "Euphoria" is the only one with 4 syllables. No other language on the planet has that many syllables. Well, except for "Your Mom's Basement."
So, we obviously need a language with at most 3 syllables. At best, one.
TooL. The only programming language you'll ever need ever again.

TooL. Always the wrong tool for the job. Masochists love it.

I checked the dictionary of programming languages http://cgibin.erols.com/ziring/cgi-bin/cep/cep.pl
There is no E language. Make it short.

Too late wikipedia report an E language. The above dictionary is not complete.

You might as well call it P-eu-nis, or go the whole hog and drop the -u-. What about r-Eu-ined?

I think that it makes sense for this website. I'd use the {eu}phoria logo, but in the same font, prefix it with Open. But keep the language name the same.

just plain ' eui ' would suffice for me.
only small downside is that it's expansion
denotes the interpreter, and does'nt account for the
'C' translation/code generation which may discourage
new users when the name is expaneded to
euphoria interpreter
'euic' for me would be a non-starter as it sounds
too much like 'yuck' (as in nasty, horrible)
