The "Moderators" thread shows its last post is by ChrisB, but when I view the thread, the last response is from Jeremy. Because I can't see the post, the little star on the forum list won't go away. Is this because somebody with new-found moderator privileges deleted ChrisB's post?

Yes. I believe it was ChrisB testing the moderation 
I did not realize this was a side effect. I was simply removing the message, however, for database speed the parent message caches when the last post was made and by who.
I'll work on it today to make the little star go away.
